Health update
My hyperthyroidism has become active again due to a lot of personal stresses in my life. I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism / Grave’s Disease in 1992.  I was on medication for one year and it settled down, flared up again about 5 years later, I was medicated again for  about a year. When it flared up again about another 5 years later I decided to seek an alternative. I took Chinese herbs and had acupuncture for about a year and it calmed down again.
The last few times it flared up, I saw a naturopathic doctor since my Chinese doctor is in another city. My naturopathic doctor’s recommendations were to eat more greens, avoid gluten and dairy. My iron is low  as well so the supplements she gave me are Ferasorb, Thorne B Complex and Serenagen. So we’ll see how that goes.
I believe we have control over our health through diet and exercise.
Update (October 2014):
Since January 16th, 2014 I have seen an endocrinologist and have been on 5mg Tapazole (Methimazole). My TSH levels are now within normal range. Hopefully I will just need to be on the medication for a year.
I also have Thalassemia Minor or Thalassemia Trait (when I thought my iron was low). In this condition, the lack of beta protein is not great enough to cause problems in the normal functioning of the hemoglobin. A person with this condition simply carries the genetic trait for thalassemia and will usually experience no health problems other than a possible mild anemia. As in mild alpha thalassemia, physicians often mistake the small red blood cells of the person with beta thalassemia minor as a sign of iron-deficiency anemia and incorrectly prescribe iron supplements.
Update (April 2018):
I’ve been medication free for the past 3 years now and I’m showing no symptoms.
